The Ruby Bootcamp is a unique kickstart into the world of coding. Whether your goal is to understand a bit more about programming or to move your career in a new direction, this is the best primer with which to begin. You will find out just how fun programming can be!
We will cover all the fundamentals of a web application. Check out the daily agenda below. Right now, most of these topics might seem very foreign to you, but soon you will understand all of this. At the end of the program you will put everything into practice during a one-day hackathon. Together with your team, and with our help where necessary, you will build your own website in just one day.
The Face of a Web Page
HTML and CSS are the basic building blocks of web development. You will be using HTML to tell the web browser how the content of our web page is structured, and use CSS to make your content look beautiful and tell the browser what the content should look like.
In Ruby Basics, you will learn how to work with Ruby and write simple Ruby programs. Ruby is a programming language that focuses on simplicity. It has an elegant syntax, and it is easy to read and to write.
While We Wait
In Ruby Loops, you will learn how to automatically repeat parts of your code using Ruby. This will cover different ways of looping in Ruby, together with the basics of iteration. You will then move on to creating your own programs, applying what you just learned.
The Family Tree
Ruby is known to be an Object Oriented programming language. But what does object oriented mean? Today you will learn the basics of Ruby Classes, what they are, how they are used, and how to write your own.
Back to Front
You will set up your first web app with just a handful of Rails commands. We will dive into each part of it to really understand what's going on. You will learn how to work with models, views, and controllers to quickly add new features to your app. By the end of the day, you will be ready to create basic web apps in Rails.
And the winner is...
Work together with a team to put everything you have learned in five days to the test with a one day Hackathon, building a web app based on our specifications and your team's ideas!
